Una Hermosa Mujer Ha Venido

(‘Una Hermosa Mujer Ha Venido’, 2018, Graphite pencil)

Known as the ‘Marilyn Monroe of Mexico”, Maria Felix once rejected a “night of passion” with King Farouk of Egypt, who had offered her Nefertiti’s crown. She said she would rather his servant, at least he was more attractive, and she turned the king down. I drew her with the tattoo of Nefertiti as her trophy of the moment.

One translation of Nefertiti’s name apparently reads ‘A beautiful woman has come’, or in Spanish, ‘Una Hermosa Mujer Ha Venido’. Maria Felix’s nicknames included La Doña (The Lady) and Maria Bonita (Beautiful Maria).
