Pencil lead was named ‘graphite’ from the Greek word for writing. The term pencil derives from the Latin word for brush, ‘pencillum’. So, your graphite pencil is literally, or etymologically, your “writing brush”. Find me a more succinct phrase that captures the spirit of art as well as that. And yet pencil art and graphite as a medium seem to be overlooked and even looked down upon in the art world. I have heard a couple arguments as to why that is, and they aren’t without merit. However, none are enough to convince me that it is inferior as a medium overall.
